He obtained his BSc and MSc from McGill University and his PhD in soil science from the University of Guelph. Craig’s primary research focus is to develop soil and crop management practices to reduce ammonia volatilization and nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils while enhancing soil health and crop yields. Craig is the national lead for the reactive N indicator in Canada.  He is the Canadian representative on the Croplands Research Group and the ‘Conservation and Nitrogen Management’ network lead. Craig is a Fellow and Past President of the Canadian Society of Soil Science.  He has served as Editor for the Canadian Journal of Soil Science\, served on the Editorial board of Agriculture Ecosystems & Environment and he is currently an Associate Editor for the Soil Science Society of America Journal. Craig has published 262 peer-reviewed papers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiego Abalos (Aarhus University\, Department of Agroecology\, Denmark) \n\n\n\nDr Diego Abalos is a Senior Researcher at Aarhus University\, Department of Agroecology (Denmark). His research ambition is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve nutrient cycling in agroecosystems\, while maintaining optimum production levels under current and future climatic conditions. His research group combines empirical and modelling approaches to design efficient and diversified cropping systems\, pointing the way for the sustainable management of the land and its nutrient cycles. Diego is an Associate Editor for Geoderma and Agronomy for Sustainable Development\, and member of the Editorial Board of Agriculture Ecosystems & Environment. He is currently leading several national and international projects funded by public and private donors. Diego has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles\, including several highly cited articles.

The Trade Dialogues on Food invite experts from governments\, non-governmental organizations\, businesses\, academia\, think tanks and foundations\, to debate the most topical issues in food trade. Each year the international trading system moves enough wheat\, maize\, rice and soybean to feed approximately three billion people around the globe. Meanwhile\, over 200 million tons of fertilizer applied to farmland annually play a key role in helping us grow enough food to sustain our expanding population\, with much of it traded on the international stage. Climate change will make international trade even more central to food security\, acting as a vital conduit for food from food-surplus to food-deficit nations in the wake of natural calamities. DESCRIPTION:On 15 and 16 November\, CIHEAM Zaragoza will host an international meeting on climate change and agriculture organised together with INIA-CSIC\, in the framework of Spain’s presidency of the Global Research Alliance on Greenhouse Gases\n\n\n\nThe event will bring together representatives from more than twenty countries as well as national and international institutions\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn 15 and 16 November\, CIHEAM Zaragoza will organise an international seminar on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change mitigation in the Mediterranean agricultural sectors. The event has the collaboration and support of the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology of the Spanish National Research Council (INIA-CSIC) in the framework of the presidency of the Global Research Alliance on Greenhouse Gases (GRA) and will bring together representatives from ministries\, international organisations (GRA\, PRIMA\, OECD\, FAO or the European Commission)\, as well as experts and scientists from countries in the Mediterranean basin and other Mediterranean climate zones of the world. \n\n\n\nThe agricultural sectors of these countries play an important role in the region’s economy and food security. However\, they also contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which\, as is well known\, have adverse effects on climate change. \n\n\n\nMitigating greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sectors of the Mediterranean basin countries requires a multi-faceted approach that includes improved agricultural and livestock management techniques\, sustainable land management practices\, the adoption of renewable energies and supportive policies. By implementing these measures\, these countries can contribute to climate change mitigation while ensuring sustainable agricultural development. \n\n\n\nHowever\, the complexity of these issues\, the current gaps between countries in the accurate estimation of emissions\, and the common need to identify\, validate and test adaptive strategies for mitigation\, call for joint actions to strengthen research\, promote knowledge sharing on these issues and enhance the capacities of researchers in all Mediterranean countries. \n\n\n\nCIHEAM ZARAGOZA PROMOTES A MEDITERRANEAN NETWORK ON GHG MITIGATION \n\n\n\nThe aim of this event is to bring together experts from the countries of the Mediterranean basin to share the current state of scientific knowledge in the region on the quantification of emissions and mitigation\, as well as to explore the potential and feasibility of collaborative activities between experts and organisations in these countries to transfer knowledge\, methods and experiences\, strengthen scientific cooperation and reduce identified knowledge gaps.
