DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the OECD COP27 Virtual Pavilion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe agriculture and food sector (agri-food sector) is vulnerable to climate change and at the same time also a significant sources of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing GHG emissions from the agri-food sector will be important in moving towards net-zero targets. There are various opportunities for the agri-food sector to reduce GHG emissions\, yet the sector faces many complex challenges and lags behind others on climate change commitments and actions.  \n\n\n\nThis event will explore the state of policies already in place in the agri-food sector and look at the policy challenges specific to addressing climate action across food systems. DESCRIPTION:Agro-food systems are fuelled by nitrogen. About 80% of this valuable resource is lost to the environment before reaching our plates. We refer to this loss as nitrogen waste. \n\n\n\nThe ambitious goal of halving nitrogen waste by 2030 requires important coordination of many actors: multidisciplinary scientists\, farmers\, industry\, policy-makers\, NGOs\, and consumers. \n\n\n\nThe XXI International N Workshop will contribute to this challenge by welcoming contributions dealing with different spatial scales (from the plot to global) and system scopes (crop\, livestock\, agroforestry\, forestry\, urban and agro-food systems). These communications will be discussed in five regular- and three special sessions\, together with eight interesting keynotes during five exciting days in October 2022 in Madrid\, Spain.

DESCRIPTION:Gaining ground: a workshop to strengthen collaborations to advance climate-smart agriculture \n\n\n\nAs part of the GRA’s continuing commitment to strengthening countries’ scientific capability and institutional capacity to increase productivity\, enhance resilience and reduce greenhouse gas emissions\, we are pleased to present “Gaining ground” – a workshop to strengthen collaborations to advance climate-smart agriculture (CSA). \n\n\n\nThe workshop/side event will showcase science-based practices that illustrate pathways to climate-smart\, low-emission agricultural development. The event will also offer an open platform to discuss how to connect the various emerging opportunities and different actors engaged in CSA to help advance long-term CSA change (See details in flyer below). Expert facilitators will share their personal experiences in working with different stakeholders from both developed and developing countries\, answer questions\, and highlight further opportunities for research collaboration provided by the GRA and other related science networks. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be held on the margins of the ADVANCE 2022 Science and Partnership for Agriculture Conference scheduled for 14 – 16th September 2022 Accra\, Ghana. SUMMARY:International Symposium on Climate-Resilient Agri-Environmental Systems (ISCRAES 2022)
DESCRIPTION:This symposium will be held from 28-31 August\, 2022 in Dublin\, Ireland. The main theme of this symposium is “Implementing the New Green Deal: The Path Towards Sustainable Agriculture“\, which refers mainly to European Green Deal having the opportunity and resources to achieve the primary objective of a sustainable Europe and planet by tackling the current major environmental\, climate\, and societal challenges facing by the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGlobally climate change is one of the most important issues facing the agricultural sectors and these\, in turn\, contribute significantly to climate change through enhanced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Other environmental concerns associated with agriculture include increased water\, air and soil pollution. Minimising potential impacts represents a big challenge for the agri-food sector\, given the need to significantly enhance food production. To meet the dual challenge of enhancing food production whilst minimising the environmental impact in line with the UN-SDGs\, cooperation with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors is required. This will also require significant steps in the development and adoption of technologies with a low carbon/GHG footprint throughout the lifecycle/supply chain. \n\n\n\nGiven that agriculture is also a major contributor to GHG emissions\, they could play a significant role in meeting GHG mitigation targets but this needs to be achieved in a sustainable way without compromising agricultural productivity. This is a global challenge as agriculture contributes significantly to the economy but is\, in turn\, a major contributor to national GHG emissions and environmental degradation includes water\, soil\, air and biodiversity. SUMMARY:Webinar: Progress towards low methane dairy sires (NZ)
DESCRIPTION:Join the NZAGRC on 22 August 2022 for their next State of Science webinar on their research into options for mitigating agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith New Zealand sheep breeders now able to measure and rank their animals based on their methane emissions\, scientists are now investigating whether the same can be achieved for cattle. \n\n\n\nLorna McNaughton from Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) will provide an update on the progress in developing a breeding programme for low-emitting dairy cattle. This work began in 2021 when LIC and CRV started measuring methane emissions and feed intake in their progeny test bulls. Lorna will outline the three-year programme\, including sharing results from the first year. Future research and possible implementation plans will also be discussed. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to ask the presenters questions using Zoom’s chat function. Lorna will use the final 15 minutes of the session to answer as many questions as possible. The Chair will select and ask questions on participants’ behalf. \n\n\n\nWho should participate?This webinar is relevant to researchers\, farmers\, rural professionals\, policy advisors and anyone else involved or interested in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from New Zealand’s primary sector.
