SUMMARY:Webinar: Managing pastoral systems to maintain or increase soil C & reduce N2O emissions
DESCRIPTION:Join the NZAGRC for their upcoming webinar titled “Managing pastoral systems to maintain or increase soil carbon and reduce nitrous oxide emissions”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoil organic carbon is originally derived from carbon dioxide inputs through photosynthesis while plant respiration continuously returns captured carbon to the atmosphere. Small changes in the balance of photosynthesis and respiration lead to either gains or losses of soil carbon. Globally\, about 20% of the extra carbon dioxide accumulated in the atmosphere has come from the management of agricultural lands. Finding ways to reduce losses or create gains in soil carbon is critical for managing the greenhouse gas burden on the planet. \n\n\n\nThis webinar focuses on the role that managing pasture swards and forage crops have on soil carbon storage in New Zealand’s pastoral systems. It will also address the greenhouse gas trade-offs associated with land management practices\, in particular practices targeting reductions in nitrous oxide emissions and the associated impact on soil carbon. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions using Zoom’s chat function. Louis will use the final 20 minutes of the session to answer as many questions as possible. The Chair will select and ask questions on participants’ behalf.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Scaling up feed additives & evidence for impacts
DESCRIPTION:As the livestock sector seeks to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement\, efforts to identify greenhouse gas emission mitigation opportunities have accelerated. A new industry of feed additives and concentrates claiming to reduce emissions is rapidly expanding. \n\n\n\nYet\, skepticism remains\, and a lack of user-friendly synthesis of existing research has left investors and policy makers without a clear indication of feed additives’ potential. Are additives that mitigate methane available or effective? Are there any associated constraints or risks? Are they scalable? \n\n\n\nThis webinar brings together experts and industry stakeholders to address the evidence and discuss the role of additives in mitigation strategies for livestock and opportunities for scaling feed additives. \n\n\n\nThe discussion is based on an in-depth assessment of leading compounds studied for their efficacy to mitigate methane emissions in ruminant livestock. The report is a concise resource that can guide investment and management decisions by all actors in the livestock supply chain and inform policymakers\, industry investors and feed industry advisers on the effectiveness\, applicability\, and broader commercial issues surrounding methane reducing feed additives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\nItemWhoWelcome & openingLini Wollenberg\, Climate and Food Specialist\, Alliance of Bioversity International & CIAT\, One CGIAR  Keynote talks Evidence for efficacy and applicability of methane inhibiting feed additives for livestockMitigating methane in livestock systemsRoger S. SUMMARY:International Conference on Zero GHG Emission in High Productive Agriculture
DESCRIPTION:The international conference on ‘Zero Greenhouse Emission in High Productive Agriculture – ZEA’ will be held 3 – 5 May 2022 in Copenhagen\, Denmark. The conference is organised by Aarhus University and hosted and financially supported by Novo Nordisk Foundation and the venue is Tuborg Havnevej 19\, DK-2600 Hellerup. \n\n\n\nGreenhouse gas emissions from agriculture originate from livestock\, manure\, soils\, land use and fossil fuels. Society is increasingly successful in reducing emissions from non-agricultural sectors\, and within a few years\, agriculture will be the sector with the largest greenhouse gas emissions\, unless new production systems and technologies are introduced. \n\n\n\nThis conference will give experienced and young scientists a forum to present novel technologies and management practices with a Zero Greenhouse Gas Emission in High Productive Agriculture (ZEA) potential to reduce greenhouse gas emission\, to discuss their work with fellow scientists and present this in the context of the overall policy targets. \n\n\n\nVisit the conference website to register before 31 January 2022\, abstracts must also be submitted by 31 January 2022. \n\n\n\nDownload ZEA conference flyer

SUMMARY:BovINE Webinar: Carbon Sequestration
DESCRIPTION:Leaders of the BovINE Environmental Sustainability Thematic Working Group\, Riet Desmet and Karen Goosens will be joined by experts Paul Pardon\, Josselin Andurand and Ennio Facq for this webinar focusing on Carbon Sequestration. \n\n\n\nCarbon sequestration is an important part of the reduction of greenhouse gases. In this\, beef production systems can play an important role and help to improve soil health. Different ways exist to sequester more carbon (C) in the soil. A known practice\, yet newly discovered in some regions\, is agroforestry. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we will talk about this practice and highlight some of the key issues for applying agroforestry. We will also look at a calculation tool (Cap2er) to calculate the carbon footprint and how C is included. We will end with an overview of rewarding schemes for C sequestration.

SUMMARY:Climate-Soil Community of Practice Event - Day 2
DESCRIPTION:Join this upcoming event within the Community of Practice\, which is jointly organized by the “4 per 1000” Initiative and GIZ Sector Project Soil Protection\, Combating Desertification\, Sustainable Land Management (SV Boden). \n\n\n\nPanel discussion on: Soil carbon sequestration and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Synergies and Tradeoffs \n\n\n\nWhat to expect:Carbon sequestration in nutrient-deprived agricultural soils in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) seems to hold a great potential to tackle two of the most pressing issues of our time: food insecurity and climate change. Carbon-rich soils increase the resilience of agricultural systems due to their improved water holding capacity\, soil aggregation and nutrient supply and hence\, contribute to food security. At the same time\, carbon sequestration in soils is regarded as one important nature-based solution to mitigate climate change. Nevertheless\, the concepts proposed by scientists\, how to improve soil health and soil fertility vary widely\, and significant discrepancies exists around the need for chemical inputs to quickly increase food and other biomass production. The different approaches might result in potential trade-offs between high levels of crop yields and carbon sequestration. \n\n\n\nDuring the two panel discussions\, we would like to have a closer look at different land management practices and their synergies and trade-offs regarding climate change mitigation and current and future food production. \n\n\n\nDuring the first panel on the 24th of March\, scientists from different disciplines introduce the scientific debate around the matter. \n\n\n\nModeration: Leigh Winowiecki (PhD)\, CIFOR/ICRAF\, Kenya \n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:15 CETWelcome and housekeeping: Juliane Wiesenhütter\, GIZ\, Germany Dr. Paul Luu\, „4 per 1000“\, France15:15 – 16:15 CETInputs by the panellists: Rolf Sommer (PhD)\, WWF\, Germany Gatien Falconnier (PhD)\, CIRAD\, France/Zimbabwe Bernard Vanlauwe (PhD)\, IITA\, Nigeria/Kenya Lydie-Stella Koutika (PhD)\, CRDPI\, Congo Wellington Mulinge (PhD)\, KALRO\, Kenya16:15 – 16:50 CETDiscussion and questions from the audience16:50 – 17:00 CETWrap up and Closing\n\n\n\nThe second panel on 25th of March focuses on the practitioners\, land users’ and decision makers’ point of view. \n\n\n\nModeration: Niels Thevs\, GIZ\, Germany \n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:15 CETWelcoming Words and short summary of Day 115:15  – 16:15 CETInputs by the panellists Pauline Chivenge\, APNI\, Morocco Barbara Banda\, NADPZ\, Zambia Francis Ngopola\, Simpson Foundation\, Malawi Upendra Singh (PhD)\, ICDF16:15 – 16:45 CETDiscussion and questions from the audience16:45 – 17:00 CETWrap up and closing\n\n\n\nMicrosoft Teams Link for the 24th (no registration needed) \n\n\n\nMicrosoft Teams Link for the 25th (no registration needed)

SUMMARY:Webinar: Implementing circularity in livestock based food systems in tropical islands
DESCRIPTION:Join CIRAD – Reunion on 7 March and/or 8 March\, 2022\, for a webinar titled ‘Implementing circularity in livestock based food systems in tropical islands’. \n\n\n\nThe webinar is part of a case study on circular food systems (CFS) on tropical islands\, carried out by CIRAD with financial support from the GRA CFS Network. \n\n\n\nTropical Islands are generally isolated territories\, where limitation of resources and land is more evident. They are often dependent on imports for a large part of their needs and produce only few key resources for exportation. Tropical islands are highly vulnerable to climate change and it is essential to reduce the environmental impact of their food systems (FS). Increasing circularity of FS around livestock production seems a promising way to reduce their carbon footprint. The webinar will dive into a developed methodology to identify livestock based scenarios to increase circularity of food systems\, addressing case studies on Madagascar and Reunion. \n\n\n\nFurther information and links to join the webinar can be found here: \n\n\n\nWebinarCIRADDownload

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Takahuri Whenua: Collective action to mitigate on-farm emissions
DESCRIPTION:Join the NZAGRC for their next State of Science webinar on their research into options for mitigating agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters: Tanira Kingi (Emeritus Scientist\, Scion) and Phil Journeaux (AgFirst) \n\n\n\nChair: Chris Koroheke (AgResearch) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMāori are significant contributors to the primary sector. Around 5.7% of Aotearoa is in Māori ownership\, most of which is Māori freehold land – governed by collective structures and passed down from generation to generation. \n\n\n\nSince 2015\, the NZAGRC has had a Māori research programme\, supporting individual Māori-owned farms to understand and reduce their agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\nThe programme has entered a new phase with the launch of Takahuri Whenua – a major project partnering with three Māori Collectives to support their ambitions to achieve a high-value\, low-emissions bio-economy within their tribal rohe. \n\n\n\nTakahuri Whenua will see the development of a framework that will help Collectives explore options for reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions across multiple land-holdings\, while meeting the expectations of their extensive landowner communities. As part of this\, farm system and land use change (forestry and/or horticulture) options for eighteen case study farms (six for each Collective) will be modelled. \n\n\n\nProject leaders\, Tanira Kingi and Phil Journeaux\, will introduce the project\, its history and context\, the modelling work and next steps prior to its completion in June 2023. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions using Zoom’s chat function. Phil and Tanira will use the final 20 minutes of the session to answer as many questions as possible. The Chair will select and ask questions on participants’ behalf. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information and to register.
