SUMMARY:Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA)
DESCRIPTION:The Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) is an international conference on central issues of vital importance for global agricultural and food policies. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has not yet been overcome worldwide\, the GFFA will once again take place in a virtual format. \n\n\n\nThe GFFA is hosted by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in cooperation with the Berlin Senate\, Messe Berlin GmbH and GFFA Berlin e.V. \n\n\n\nThe five-day forum features a large number of events that provide 3\,000 participants from the worlds of politics\, industry\, science\, and civil society with an opportunity to address and reach consensus on issues and challenges relating to global agricultural policy and food security. \n\n\n\nIn the past\, high-level keynote speakers such as António Guterres\, Josefa Sacko\, Angela Merkel\, Ban Ki-moon\, and Prince Charles joined the GFFA line-up. \n\n\n\nThe political highlight of the GFFA is the Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Conference which is not open to the public. It is the world’s largest conference of agriculture ministers\, attended by around 70 agriculture ministers. High-level representatives from more than 10 international organisations such as the FAO\, OECD\, WTO and World Bank also attend the conference.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Developing methane inhibitors for grazing livestock on NZ farms
DESCRIPTION:Join the NZAGRC State of Science webinar on 6 December 2021 to learn more about “Developing methane inhibitors for grazing livestock on New Zealand farms”.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMethane inhibitors or feed additives offer a real opportunity to lower emissions by reducing the activity of methane-producing microbes in the digestive systems of ruminant livestock. This mitigation strategy is most effective when the additive is in every mouthful of feed and can reduce methane produced during rumen fermentation. \n\n\n\nHowever\, daily administration comes at a practical and economic cost. Globally\, two potential feed additive options have emerged in the last few years – Bovaer by DSM and a seaweed species from FutureFeed in Australia. Both have been demonstrated to be effective in total mixed ration systems where feeds are provided to ruminants daily and the additive can be formulated into the feed. \n\n\n\nWhile this is encouraging\, their application in New Zealand’s farming systems is a challenge. Research funded by the Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGgRc) is helping overcome this – investigating highly potent compounds that can be provided to animals through long-life (>100 days) intra-ruminal devices. \n\n\n\nRon Ronimus will give an update on progress in this quest supported by Mark Aspin providing a commercialisation and delivery perspective\, outlining the challenges that have been overcome – and those that remain. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to ask Ron and Mark questions using Zoom’s chat function. They will use the final 20 minutes of the session to answer as many questions as possible. Addressing this will require concerted and coordinated efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from human activity. Farmed livestock are one source of such emissions. Achieving net zero carbon requires a strong consensus on where the industry is currently and a clear understanding of the areas which can contribute the most towards achieving this ambition. \n\n\n\nReducing the environmental footprint of livestock production and adapting our livestock production systems to the changing climate to support global food security is possible.
