DESCRIPTION:Join us as Louis Schipper and Owen Fenton discuss the challenges of managing soil carbon on agricultural peatlands. \n\n\n\nA surprisingly high share of New Zealand’s carbon dioxide emissions comes from a tiny proportion of soil – peat bogs that have been drained to support productive agriculture. Estimates indicate that drained peatlands in New Zealand (<1% of the land area) contribute about 8% of our national net greenhouse gas emissions. A similar emissions profile is estimated for Ireland. Is there anything we can do to manage this? DESCRIPTION:The Climate and Clean Air Coalition\, a Partner in the Global Research Alliance (GRA)\, is producing a comprehensive integrated assessment on greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate pollutants (SCLP) from the Agricultural and Food sector. The report\, to be presented at COP 30 in Brazil\, will develop national scale SLCP and GHG emission scenarios for 2050. These will explore ‘emission pathways’ comprising combinations of policies and mitigation measures designed to reduce emissions through e.g. changes in national diets\, livestock and crop production technologies and practices\, and from improvements in food waste management. \n\n\n\nTo help develop these future ‘emission pathway’ scenarios the Agricultural and Food report is using the ADOPT model\, developed by CSIRO in Australia. ADOPT is designed to provide a quantitative estimate of peak adoption rates and time to peak adoption of mitigation measures based on the characteristics of the farming population implementing these measures and of the measures themselves. \n\n\n\nTo help ensure that as far as is possible the data used in the modelling reflects the experience of practitioners working across the globe\, the CCAC is consulting on the predicted peak adoption and time to peak adoption values. This consultation will comprise a survey in which participants are asked to provide their answers to a selection of ADOPT questions for a subset of the >100 mitigation measures being considered in the report. \n\n\n\nThe GRA\, with its 68 member countries\, 30+ Partners and comprehensive array of Research Groups and Networks is ideally positioned to play a major role in this consultation exercise. ADOPT is designed to provide a quantitative estimate of peak adoption rates and time to peak adoption of mitigation measures based on the characteristics of the farming population implementing these measures and of the measures themselves. \n\n\n\nTo help ensure that as far as is possible the data used in the modelling reflects the experience of practitioners working across the globe\, the CCAC is consulting on the predicted peak adoption and time to peak adoption values. This consultation will comprise a survey in which participants are asked to provide their answers to a selection of ADOPT questions for a subset of the >100 mitigation measures being considered in the report. \n\n\n\nThe GRA\, with its 68 member countries\, 30+ Partners and comprehensive array of Research Groups and Networks is ideally positioned to play a major role in this consultation exercise. To attend this online webinar\, click on the registration link HERE. \n\n\n\nChair: \n\n\n\nHero Gollany\, Co-chair of the GRA Croplands Research Group (USDA-Agricultural Research Service – CPCRC\, USA) \n\n\n\nSpeaker bios: \n\n\n\nCraig Drury (Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada) \n\n\n\nDr. Craig Drury is a soil biochemist with Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada at the Harrow Research & Development Centre in Southwestern Ontario. He obtained his BSc and MSc from McGill University and his PhD in soil science from the University of Guelph. Craig’s primary research focus is to develop soil and crop management practices to reduce ammonia volatilization and nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soils while enhancing soil health and crop yields. Craig is the national lead for the reactive N indicator in Canada.  He is the Canadian representative on the Croplands Research Group and the ‘Conservation and Nitrogen Management’ network lead. Craig is a Fellow and Past President of the Canadian Society of Soil Science.  He has served as Editor for the Canadian Journal of Soil Science\, served on the Editorial board of Agriculture Ecosystems & Environment and he is currently an Associate Editor for the Soil Science Society of America Journal. Craig has published 262 peer-reviewed papers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiego Abalos (Aarhus University\, Department of Agroecology\, Denmark) \n\n\n\nDr Diego Abalos is a Senior Researcher at Aarhus University\, Department of Agroecology (Denmark). His research ambition is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve nutrient cycling in agroecosystems\, while maintaining optimum production levels under current and future climatic conditions. His research group combines empirical and modelling approaches to design efficient and diversified cropping systems\, pointing the way for the sustainable management of the land and its nutrient cycles. Diego is an Associate Editor for Geoderma and Agronomy for Sustainable Development\, and member of the Editorial Board of Agriculture Ecosystems & Environment. He is currently leading several national and international projects funded by public and private donors. Diego has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles\, including several highly cited articles.
