SUMMARY:OECD webinar: New Zealand’s standardized methodology for estimating farm-level emissions
DESCRIPTION:The OECD is holding a webinar on New Zealand’s standardized methodology for estimating farm-level emissions. Spanish ECOGAN tool for farm-level GHG calculations on Tuesday 11 March from 10:30am to 11:30am Paris time. \n\n\n\nMPI worked with the agriculture sector to develop a standard way to estimate on-farm greenhouse gas emissions. This methodology was released on 13 December 2024. Currently there are more than 10 emissions calculators\, all using different methods to estimate emissions. Our standardized estimation is a key step towards pricing emissions in the future and will support on-farm emissions measurement by 2025. Having a standard method will also enable new products and features that improve farm management and reporting. \n\n\n\nOn 24 February the OECD published report Measuring Carbon Footprints of Agri-Food Products\, which discusses the eight building blocks needed for measuring carbon footprints of agri-food products. Two crucial building blocks are the availability of scientific methods\, and reliable and easy-to-use farm-level calculation tools. One challenge is that existing farm-level tools often use different methods\, leading to different results for the same farm. DESCRIPTION:The OECD is holding a webinar on the Spanish ECOGAN tool for farm-level GHG calculations on Tuesday 18 February\, from 4pm-5pm Paris time. \n\n\n\nIn 2023-2024\, OECD work explored the building blocks needed for measuring carbon footprints of agri-food products. On 24 February\, they will publish their report Measuring Carbon Footprints of Agri-Food Products\, which discusses the eight building blocks in detail. A crucial building block is the availability of reliable and easy-to-use farm-level calculation tools. \n\n\n\nThe Spanish Ministry for Agriculture\, Fisheries and Food has been developing and implementing the ECOGAN tool\, a farm-level calculation tool tailored to Spanish agriculture. The tool not only allows farmers to estimate greenhouse gas emissions\, but also resource consumption and emission of other pollutants. The tool makes it easier for farmers to meet reporting requirements\, while the information on farm-level practices is used in compiling Spain’s national inventory of greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, Javier Piquer Vidal (Ministry of Agriculture\, Fisheries and Food\, Spain) will be presenting the ECOGAN tool and how it was developed. Dates for the conference are February 17-20\, 2025. \n\n\n\nAlthough still in the preliminary stages\, we are confident that we are planning an eagerly anticipated meeting. Estimates indicate that drained peatlands in New Zealand (<1% of the land area) contribute about 8% of our national net greenhouse gas emissions. A similar emissions profile is estimated for Ireland. The report\, to be presented at COP 30 in Brazil\, will develop national scale SLCP and GHG emission scenarios for 2050. These will explore ‘emission pathways’ comprising combinations of policies and mitigation measures designed to reduce emissions through e.g. changes in national diets\, livestock and crop production technologies and practices\, and from improvements in food waste management. \n\n\n\nTo help develop these future ‘emission pathway’ scenarios the Agricultural and Food report is using the ADOPT model\, developed by CSIRO in Australia. ADOPT is designed to provide a quantitative estimate of peak adoption rates and time to peak adoption of mitigation measures based on the characteristics of the farming population implementing these measures and of the measures themselves. \n\n\n\nTo help ensure that as far as is possible the data used in the modelling reflects the experience of practitioners working across the globe\, the CCAC is consulting on the predicted peak adoption and time to peak adoption values. This consultation will comprise a survey in which participants are asked to provide their answers to a selection of ADOPT questions for a subset of the >100 mitigation measures being considered in the report. \n\n\n\nThe GRA\, with its 68 member countries\, 30+ Partners and comprehensive array of Research Groups and Networks is ideally positioned to play a major role in this consultation exercise. SUMMARY:The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) needs your help - Choose your date and time
DESCRIPTION:The Climate and Clean Air Coalition\, a Partner in the Global Research Alliance (GRA)\, is producing a comprehensive integrated assessment on greenhouse gas emissions and short-lived climate pollutants (SCLP) from the Agricultural and Food sector. The report\, to be presented at COP 30 in Brazil\, will develop national scale SLCP and GHG emission scenarios for 2050. These will explore ‘emission pathways’ comprising combinations of policies and mitigation measures designed to reduce emissions through e.g. changes in national diets\, livestock and crop production technologies and practices\, and from improvements in food waste management. \n\n\n\nTo help develop these future ‘emission pathway’ scenarios the Agricultural and Food report is using the ADOPT model\, developed by CSIRO in Australia. ADOPT is designed to provide a quantitative estimate of peak adoption rates and time to peak adoption of mitigation measures based on the characteristics of the farming population implementing these measures and of the measures themselves. \n\n\n\nTo help ensure that as far as is possible the data used in the modelling reflects the experience of practitioners working across the globe\, the CCAC is consulting on the predicted peak adoption and time to peak adoption values. This consultation will comprise a survey in which participants are asked to provide their answers to a selection of ADOPT questions for a subset of the >100 mitigation measures being considered in the report. \n\n\n\nThe GRA\, with its 68 member countries\, 30+ Partners and comprehensive array of Research Groups and Networks is ideally positioned to play a major role in this consultation exercise. It can help ensure assumptions about the deployment of mitigation technologies and practices are well grounded and reflect local knowledge and experience. \n\n\n\nThe survey will open on December 2\, 2025\, and close on December 13\, 2025. The GRA Special Representative\, Dr Harry Clark\, will hold a series of Webinars to further explain the background to the Agriculture and Food assessment report\, the approach being adopted and answer questions about the ADOPT model and the survey. In this information event\, the German Nagoya Protocol HuB project will share its expertise with you and give you relevant insights and necessary information to assess whether your research might also have ABS obligations to take into consideration. \n\n\n\nDuring this information event\, we will go step by step through what researchers need to know and do to be compliant with any obligations stemming from the Nagoya Protocol and the EU ABS regulation. You will hear about the user checks that have already started in Germany\, what are some of the direct consequences for being non-compliant (e.g. fines\, embargo of material and publications\, etc.)\, and tools and tips already available for you to use and inform yourself.
