DESCRIPTION:In parallel to the XXIII Latin American and XXXVIII Brazilian Congress of Soil Science\, EMBRAPA\, ORCaSa’s regional node for South America\, is organising a joint seminar of the Brazilian Chapter of the International Humic Substances and Natural Organic Matter Society (IHSS-NOM) and the International Research Consortium on Soil Carbon. \n\n\n\nThe seminar aims to provide information\, based on scientific knowledge\, on the potential for the application of humic substance and biochar derived products in agriculture\, and on the role of soil organic carbon (SOC) in mitigating climate change\, improving the resilience of agricultural systems and on the enabling and regulatory drivers as well as the challenges and limitations of soil carbon sequestration. \n\n\n\nIt targets scientists\, professionals\, farmers and students interested in soil and natural sciences\, agriculture\, and related stakeholders\, such as policymakers\, funders and related industry experts. \n\n\n\nQuestions and topics addressed\n\n\n\nSoil organic matter (SOM) is the largest pool of SOC\, which is directly linked to the global carbon and nitrogen cycle. Since the implementation of the Paris Agreement\, the role of SOC and agriculture has been widely recognised\, positioning sustainable agricultural practices and soil carbon sequestration as one of the most effective ways of mitigating climate change and enhancing the resilience and adaptation capacity of agrosystems. \n\n\n\nConsiderable efforts are being made to identify and develop agricultural practices\, processes and technologies that enhance SOC sequestration and its co-benefits\, such as soil fertility and soil health. Particularly in tropical and sub-tropical soils\, SOC is the main soil component that drives fertility and health\, as well as being the basis for the development of natural products to control plant growth\, defences and organo-mineral fertiliser components (operationally defined humic substances). \n\n\n\nAdequate measurement and monitoring of SOC stock changes are crucial to assess the potential of soil carbon sequestration technologies and to implement and evaluate relevant public policies aimed at enhancing the value of those using low-carbon practices and processes. \n\n\n\nTimetable and registration\n\n\n\n8 AM until 12:30 PM (UTC -3) \n\n\n\nHybrid event with two options for registration: Online or On-site.

AgMIP Global workshops bring together this international community of scientists developing the next generation of integrated model systems that can inform decisions including the implementation of sustainable agricultural systems and assessments of food security in a changing world. \n\n\n\nThe combination of a warming Earth and an increasing population is expected to strain the world’s food systems in the coming decades. Food security\, defined as the availability and adequate access at all times to sufficient\, safe\, and nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life\, now and going forward\, is at risk in many places in the world. Farmers and others in the agricultural and food sectors are faced with the quadruple task of contributing to global reductions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions\, coping with an already-changing climate\, delivering healthy and nutritious food\, and sustainably managing soil and water resources. Agriculture is being called upon to ensure both human and planetary health. \n\n\n\nAgMIP9\n\n\n\nThe 9th Global Workshop of AgMIP will be held at Columbia University in New York\, NY\, USA\, June 26th-30th\, 2023.  \n\n\n\nIn the past\, AgMIP has hosted the international modeling community at eight Global Workshops in four different countries – including at FAO in Rome\, Italy\, Columbia University in New York City\, the University of Florida in Gainesville\, Le Corum in Montpellier\, France\, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture in San Jose\, Costa Rica\, and a virtual webshop in 2020.

To better identify policies and measures that align with national adaptation and mitigation efforts\, there is a need for more advanced methods of compiling GHG inventories that are aligned to livestock development objectives and tracking progress towards Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) emission reduction targets. This means progressing from the current Tier 1 methods used by most countries in compiling their inventories to Tier 2 methods.

DESCRIPTION:The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) in Partnership with the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) is putting together the “Training of Trainers on Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCSA) in West Africa”.  \n\n\n\nThe training is scheduled as follows:– Date: December 8th and 9th 2022– Time: 09:00 am [Daily] Greenwich Mean Time \n\n\n\nKindly register for this training using the zoom link HERE.  \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the training. \n\n\n\nTraining Conditions: \n\n\n\n1. The trainee should be a national from any of the West African countries (Anglophone or Francophone). \n\n\n\na. Trainee should be a postgraduate student; staff of the national research or extension institute\, university\, NGO; enthusiast of climate change issues\, etc. \n\n\n\nb. Trainees should have a modest knowledge of ICT use in agriculture. \n\n\n\n2. All virtual trainees will be admitted into the West Africa Cohort of Trainers on Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCSA). \n\n\n\n3. All trainees will be given a certificate of training [Terms and conditions apply]. \n\n\n\na. Issuance of the certificate will be contingent on 75% time participation in the online training. \n\n\n\nb. SUMMARY:Webinar: Policies in pursuit of a low emission agri-food sector
DESCRIPTION:This event is part of the OECD COP27 Virtual Pavilion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe agriculture and food sector (agri-food sector) is vulnerable to climate change and at the same time also a significant sources of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing GHG emissions from the agri-food sector will be important in moving towards net-zero targets. There are various opportunities for the agri-food sector to reduce GHG emissions\, yet the sector faces many complex challenges and lags behind others on climate change commitments and actions.  \n\n\n\nThis event will explore the state of policies already in place in the agri-food sector and look at the policy challenges specific to addressing climate action across food systems. The event will also explore potential policy solutions\, such as emission taxes\, as well as other supply and demand-side measures\, that could help to strike a balance between GHG abatement and broader societal objectives.
