SUMMARY:Seminar: GHG emissions & climate change mitigation in Mediterranean agricultural sectors
DESCRIPTION:On 15 and 16 November\, CIHEAM Zaragoza will host an international meeting on climate change and agriculture organised together with INIA-CSIC\, in the framework of Spain’s presidency of the Global Research Alliance on Greenhouse Gases\n\n\n\nThe event will bring together representatives from more than twenty countries as well as national and international institutions\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOn 15 and 16 November\, CIHEAM Zaragoza will organise an international seminar on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change mitigation in the Mediterranean agricultural sectors. The event has the collaboration and support of the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology of the Spanish National Research Council (INIA-CSIC) in the framework of the presidency of the Global Research Alliance on Greenhouse Gases (GRA) and will bring together representatives from ministries\, international organisations (GRA\, PRIMA\, OECD\, FAO or the European Commission)\, as well as experts and scientists from countries in the Mediterranean basin and other Mediterranean climate zones of the world. \n\n\n\nThe agricultural sectors of these countries play an important role in the region’s economy and food security. However\, they also contribute to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which\, as is well known\, have adverse effects on climate change. \n\n\n\nMitigating greenhouse gas emissions in the agricultural sectors of the Mediterranean basin countries requires a multi-faceted approach that includes improved agricultural and livestock management techniques\, sustainable land management practices\, the adoption of renewable energies and supportive policies. By implementing these measures\, these countries can contribute to climate change mitigation while ensuring sustainable agricultural development. \n\n\n\nHowever\, the complexity of these issues\, the current gaps between countries in the accurate estimation of emissions\, and the common need to identify\, validate and test adaptive strategies for mitigation\, call for joint actions to strengthen research\, promote knowledge sharing on these issues and enhance the capacities of researchers in all Mediterranean countries. \n\n\n\nCIHEAM ZARAGOZA PROMOTES A MEDITERRANEAN NETWORK ON GHG MITIGATION \n\n\n\nThe aim of this event is to bring together experts from the countries of the Mediterranean basin to share the current state of scientific knowledge in the region on the quantification of emissions and mitigation\, as well as to explore the potential and feasibility of collaborative activities between experts and organisations in these countries to transfer knowledge\, methods and experiences\, strengthen scientific cooperation and reduce identified knowledge gaps. Ultimately\, to create the starting point for a Mediterranean network on GHG mitigation in the agricultural\, livestock\, forestry and land use change sectors. \n\n\n\nIn-person participation in the seminar is by invitation only\, but there are open sessions that can be followed face-to-face or on-line via streaming. \n\n\n\nThe programme and registration link for the open sessions can be found HERE.

SUMMARY:Webinar - "Soil inorganic carbon: The often unaccounted yet irrecoverable carbon pool"
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is being organised by “4 per 1000” and is the second in their soil carbon science webinar series. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoil inorganic carbon (SIC)\, a pivotal component of terrestrial carbon stocks\, contributes to up to half of the terrestrial C stock and holds significance in arid and semi-arid environments. Despite its importance in agriculture\, CO2 sequestration\, and climate regulation\, SIC has received less attention compared to soil organic carbon (SOC). Recent findings challenge the notion of SIC’s negligible contribution to the global carbon cycle\, revealing its susceptibility to climate change and agricultural practices. Additionally SOC and SIC are interrelated and we need to account for both SOC and SIC to build a complete picture of the soil C cycle. In addition\, understanding the interaction of both C forms helps build resilient soils to global changes. \n\n\n\nLearn more about this webinar HERE.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Indicators to measure circularity: developments & considerations
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE! The Circular Food Systems Network is organising a webinar this coming September on indications for circular food systems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn September 15th\, we would like to discuss with you the questions: can we measure circularity? How would we do that? And what are the limitations of using indicators? Indicators are a way to measure circularity of a food system\, but are there alternatives? How important is it to measure circularity? How important is it to make circularity measurable – is that necessary or does that defeat the purpose of circularity in food systems?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLAUNCH WHITE PAPER ‘CIRCULAR FOOD SYSTEMS AROUND THE WORLD’ \n\n\n\nOn this date the whitepaper ‘Circular Food Systems around the world’ will be launched. This whitepaper is a product of our CFS network. Members of the network shared short communications on what circular food systems mean in different parts of the world. This white paper will present the opportunities and the next steps to advance CFS. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSNEAKPEAK OF THE PROGRAM\n\n\n\nThroughout 2023\, three projects funded by the CFS Network\, focus on the development of indicators for circularity. During the webinar\, the project leaders will present the scope of the projects\, first insights\, challenges\, and preliminary results. Afterwards\, the project leaders will be part of a panel to discuss indicators (and possible alternatives) to measure circularity. Moreover\, we will discuss whether it is necessary to measure circularity. \n\n\n\nProjects: \n\n\n\n\nCircularity in Integrated Systems: Resource Recovery for Feed\, Fuel and (Organic) Fertilizer Self-sufficiency in Ethiopia – by Carlos Brazao Alho \n\n\n\nBenchmarking nutrient circularity at different scales: Using a food systems perspective – by Marloes van Loon \n\n\n\nA holistic framework for assessment of circular food systems – by Vicki Burggraaf \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSUBSCRIBE HERE\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPlease subscribe to the webinar and don’t hesitate to share this event with your colleagues.  \n\n\n\nCFS network webinar – Indicators to measure circularity: developments & considerations (office.com) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJOINING INFORMATION\n\n\n\nJoin on your computer\, mobile app or room device \n\n\n\nClick here to join the meeting \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 356 182 163 065 Passcode: QfkGuy \n\n\n\nDownload Teams | Join on the web \n\n\n\nThis is a Microsoft Teams meeting. \n\n\n\nLearn More | Meeting options

SUMMARY:UNGA78: Climate-smart approaches to enhance ruminant/livestock production efficiency and food production systems
DESCRIPTION:This virtual session is part of the Science Summit at UNGA78. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate-smart Approaches to enhance Ruminant/Livestock production efficiency and Food production systems \n\n\n\nThe state of Africa’s livestock agriculture and its vulnerability to climate risk is an ongoing matter of importance\, not only for the continent but also for the global world. Climate change is a reality that will result in higher temperatures and more extreme events such as droughts\, floods\, higher temperatures and more heat waves\, which will affect the wellbeing and stability on the continent and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals. In the case of livestock in tropical and sub-tropical African countries this will result in (1) a decrease in production (meat and milk)\, (2) lower fertility (in both males and females) that will affect reproduction\, (2) more diseases\, especially the host transmittable diseases and (4) lower quality of the grazing. In these African countries\, climate change represents a feedback-loop in which livestock production both contributes to climate change and suffers from the consequences. That is why adaptation\, resilience and mitigation strategies are critical for sustainability.  This is in contrast to developed countries in temperate regions where the focus is mainly on mitigation. \n\n\n\nThis session will highlight some of the climate-smart approaches\, food production systems and climate responses that are essential in terms of required actions/interventions from the United Nations and at a global level to prioritize agricultural research and involvement of farmers in terms of agenda setting and related investments. \n\n\n\nThe speakers will highlight the need for evidence-based decisions around complex issues related to climate change\, with relevant indicators. Therefore\, science becomes a fundamental part to enhance resilience of people\, production and food systems. This makes relationships between scientists\, collaborating regions\, farmers and farmer’s organizations important. \n\n\n\nProgramme (2h30min) \n\n\n\n\nOpening remarks (5 min): Dr Andrew Magadlela (Group Executive: Animal Sciences\, ARC); \n\n\n\nWelcome and Introduction (10 min): Prof Azwihangwisi Maiwashe (General Manager: ARC-Animal Production); \n\n\n\nPresentation (20 min): Dr. Ackim Mwape (New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre);  Overview of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases and partnerships in Africa.\n\n\n\nPresentation (20 min): Dr Claudia Arndt (ILRI\, Kenya);  Current State of Research on Livestock GHG Emissions and Mitigation in Sub-Saharan Africa.\n\n\n\nPresentation (20 min): Prof Machiel Scholtz: (ARC-Animal Production\, South Africa);  Climate-smart research: Current and planned projects\, challenges and opportunities for southern-Africa.\n\n\n\nPresentation (15 min): Dr Sithembile Ndemi Mwamakamba (FANRPAN); Analysis of policy for climate change mitigation and adaptation.\n\n\n\nPresentation (15 min): Ms Minky Groenewald (Eswatini); An overview of NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) in southern African and the role of farmers organizations.\n\n\n\nPanel discussion (20 min)\n\n\n\nClosure (10 min): Prof M Makgahlela (Research Team Manager: Animal Breeding and Genetics\, ARC-Animal Production)

SUMMARY:Webinar: Is there a limit to Soil Organic Carbon sequestration?
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is being organised by the Scientific and Technical Committee of “4per1000“ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe International 4per1000 initiative presents Soil Carbon Science Webinar Series. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an insightful webinar on the role of soil organic carbon (SOC) in maintaining soil functions and mitigating climate change. SOC plays a vital role in crop production\, nutrient and water cycling\, carbon storage\, and habitat for soil biodiversity. Recent developments have defined SOC into two operational fractions: particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC). The formation of long-lived MAOC is crucial for climate change mitigation. While the assumption is that soils have limited ability to accumulate MAOC\, a recent study challenges this notion\, prompting further mechanistic investigations. We are delighted to have two esteemed experts in the field\, Dr. Christopher Poeplau from the Thünen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture and Prof. M. Francesca Cotrufo from Colorado State University\, who will delve into this topic during the webinar. \n\n\n\nJoin us to gain valuable insights and discuss the formation of MAOC\, its implications for soil carbon management\, and the potential impact on climate change mitigation strategies. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with leading researchers in the field. \n\n\n\nMore information HERE.
