SUMMARY:Webinar: National agriculture inventory data collection and management
DESCRIPTION:Join the Inventories and NDC (I&NDC) Network on 14 June from 18:00 – 19:30 (GMT/UTC) for the second session of their 2022 webinar series titled “National agriculture inventory data collection and management”. \n\n\n\nPolicies for agriculture mitigation strategies\, as we discussed in the first webinar of the I&NDC Network series\, are shaped by accurate national agriculture emissions estimates. However\, estimates are only as good as the data that underpin them. National activity data collection and its management is a universal challenge for compilers from Annex I and non-Annex II countries alike. \n\n\n\nThe aim of this webinar is to increase awareness on overcoming a lack of good quality data\, and on setting up data management frameworks to support increasing emissions reporting from Tier 1 to Tier 2 levels. The session will bring together expert speakers whose work focuses on improving agriculture inventory activity data related issues. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker Biographies \n\n\n\nAndreas Wilkes – ASEAN and Africa Inventory Capability Building Programme Lead\, NZAGRC \n\n\n\nAndreas is leading New Zealand’s Inventory Capability Building efforts in ASEAN and African countries and has extensive experience in livestock emission MRV and mitigation. Andreas was the lead author of the GRA FAO Livestock Activity Data Guidance which provides guidance on how to collect and analyze the activity data required for Tier 2 livestock GHG inventories. He will present some practical experiences from developing countries\, and reflections on the implications for continuous improvement and research. \n\n\n\nStephen Ogle – Associate Director\, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory\, CSU | Professor\, Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability\, CSU \n\n\n\nStephen’s research focus is improving national GHG inventories\, better understanding socioeconomic drivers of land use and management decisions\, and predicting the likelihood of future GHG mitigation in agricultural lands. He has a keen interest in assisting governments in developing countries with improving their GHG inventories and has done extensive capacity-building work in over 20 countries\, assisting national compilers with improving GHG inventories in Asia\, Africa\, Central America and South America. Stephen has contributed as an instructor to numerous science and government inventory training workshops. He was a contributing lead author for the 2019 IPCC Refinement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines of Volume 4\, AFOLU. Stephen led the development of the Agriculture and Land Use National GHG Inventory Software (ALU)\, a free downloadable tool for the estimation of national AFOLU inventories. Along with Dr. Richard Conant\, he established the Master of Greenhouse Gas Management and Accounting Programme at CSU. \n\n\n\nLuanne Stevens – Environmental consultant and GHGMI Fellow \n\n\n\nLuanne has worked in the AFOLU inventory and MRV space for more than 15 years and has been the lead compiler for South Africa’s AFOLU inventory since 2010. She supports developing countries to strengthen their capacity to compile inventories\, develop mitigation projections\, and develop NDCs and MRV systems. Luanne has been involved in capacity building projects across Africa (including Eswatini\, Uganda\, Tanzania\, Lesotho). She is currently supporting the ICAT projects in Eswatini and Uganda\, and was responsible for creating the capacity building modules for the ICAT Forestry and Agriculture Assessment Guides. In addition\, she is the project manager for the IICA-GCF CARICOM AgREADY project in the Caribbean where she has been involved in assessing the role of agriculture in NDCs across the Caribbean\, providing training to inventory compilers and data collectors\, and assisting in the development of agriculture inventory improvement plans. \n\n\n\nSekai Ngarize – Senior Agriculture\, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) and MRV Specialist \n\n\n\nSekai currently works as an international Climate and MRV consultant strengthening institutional capacity in developing countries for compliance with the Transparency Reporting Requirements of the Paris Agreement. SUMMARY:Workshop: Reducing Enteric CH4 Emissions from Sub-Saharan Africa
DESCRIPTION:African countries contribute to about 10% of enteric CH4 emissions from dairy cattle worldwide despite producing only 3.9% of the world’s milk. This is because livestock production in most Sub-Saharan African countries\, by virtue of being dependent on low quality crop residues\, leads to very high levels of enteric methane per unit of product\, as compared to livestock systems in developed regions. Methane also represents an important loss of energy that could be otherwise channeled into growth or milk production by ruminants. \n\n\n\nJoin us at this interactive workshop to:• Discuss findings on emissions of local cattle and small ruminant breeds.• Explore different livestock systems scenarios for reducing enteric CH4 emissions.• Highlight measures that would be most applicable to mitigate emissions while supporting and possibly improving livestock productivity. \n\n\n\nLivestock Systems Innovation Lab Workshop FlyerDownload\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis meeting is aligned with GGAA 2022.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Managing pastoral systems to maintain or increase soil C & reduce N2O emissions
DESCRIPTION:Join the NZAGRC for their upcoming webinar titled “Managing pastoral systems to maintain or increase soil carbon and reduce nitrous oxide emissions”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSoil organic carbon is originally derived from carbon dioxide inputs through photosynthesis while plant respiration continuously returns captured carbon to the atmosphere. Small changes in the balance of photosynthesis and respiration lead to either gains or losses of soil carbon. Globally\, about 20% of the extra carbon dioxide accumulated in the atmosphere has come from the management of agricultural lands. Finding ways to reduce losses or create gains in soil carbon is critical for managing the greenhouse gas burden on the planet. \n\n\n\nThis webinar focuses on the role that managing pasture swards and forage crops have on soil carbon storage in New Zealand’s pastoral systems. It will also address the greenhouse gas trade-offs associated with land management practices\, in particular practices targeting reductions in nitrous oxide emissions and the associated impact on soil carbon. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions using Zoom’s chat function. Louis will use the final 20 minutes of the session to answer as many questions as possible. The Chair will select and ask questions on participants’ behalf.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Scaling up feed additives & evidence for impacts
DESCRIPTION:As the livestock sector seeks to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement\, efforts to identify greenhouse gas emission mitigation opportunities have accelerated. A new industry of feed additives and concentrates claiming to reduce emissions is rapidly expanding. \n\n\n\nYet\, skepticism remains\, and a lack of user-friendly synthesis of existing research has left investors and policy makers without a clear indication of feed additives’ potential. Are additives that mitigate methane available or effective? Are there any associated constraints or risks? Are they scalable? \n\n\n\nThis webinar brings together experts and industry stakeholders to address the evidence and discuss the role of additives in mitigation strategies for livestock and opportunities for scaling feed additives. \n\n\n\nThe discussion is based on an in-depth assessment of leading compounds studied for their efficacy to mitigate methane emissions in ruminant livestock. The report is a concise resource that can guide investment and management decisions by all actors in the livestock supply chain and inform policymakers\, industry investors and feed industry advisers on the effectiveness\, applicability\, and broader commercial issues surrounding methane reducing feed additives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\nItemWhoWelcome & openingLini Wollenberg\, Climate and Food Specialist\, Alliance of Bioversity International & CIAT\, One CGIAR  Keynote talks Evidence for efficacy and applicability of methane inhibiting feed additives for livestockMitigating methane in livestock systemsRoger S. SUMMARY:BovINE Webinar: Carbon Sequestration
DESCRIPTION:Leaders of the BovINE Environmental Sustainability Thematic Working Group\, Riet Desmet and Karen Goosens will be joined by experts Paul Pardon\, Josselin Andurand and Ennio Facq for this webinar focusing on Carbon Sequestration. \n\n\n\nCarbon sequestration is an important part of the reduction of greenhouse gases. In this\, beef production systems can play an important role and help to improve soil health. Different ways exist to sequester more carbon (C) in the soil. A known practice\, yet newly discovered in some regions\, is agroforestry. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we will talk about this practice and highlight some of the key issues for applying agroforestry. We will also look at a calculation tool (Cap2er) to calculate the carbon footprint and how C is included. We will end with an overview of rewarding schemes for C sequestration.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Policy coherence for climate-smart agriculture in Africa
DESCRIPTION:Join CIGAR for this round table on ‘Policy coherence for climate-smart agriculture in Africa’. \n\n\n\nAccelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) has led extensive analysis and dialogues on the coherence of policies that support – or sometimes even undermine – our ambitions for more climate-smart agriculture across Africa. \n\n\n\nOur research has identified the issues. And through our engagement\, we’re developing recommendations that address critical gaps in the design\, implementation\, monitoring and financing of climate action and the transformation of agriculture across Africa. \n\n\n\nThis roundtable workshop will inform and validate the findings of a forthcoming AICCRA working paper.

SUMMARY:Conference Circular@WUR: Living within planetary boundaries
DESCRIPTION:A transition towards a circular bio-based and climate smart society is the answer to many of the societal challenges we are facing today. Circular systems in the green and in the blue domain will close water\, nutrient and carbon cycles and from this\, minimize resource losses and climate change effects\, and hence assure that society can live within the planetary boundaries. \n\n\n\nBased on the call for sessions\, the organizing committee has developed an inspiring program that supports the identification of pathways to accelerate the transition towards a circular bio-based society. The program involves relevant and impactful keynotes; masterclasses and workshops in which you can learn and experience the circular challenge yourselves by participating in masterclasses\, scientific sessions presenting the latest scientific developments and the opportunity to be inspired by visiting the most innovative circular companies in the Netherlands. \n\n\n\nMore information HERE. \n\n\n\nDownload the preliminary programme HERE. \n\n\n\nNote: This conference was originally scheduled for Dec 2021.

SUMMARY:Climate-Soil Community of Practice Event - Day 2
DESCRIPTION:Join this upcoming event within the Community of Practice\, which is jointly organized by the “4 per 1000” Initiative and GIZ Sector Project Soil Protection\, Combating Desertification\, Sustainable Land Management (SV Boden). \n\n\n\nPanel discussion on: Soil carbon sequestration and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Synergies and Tradeoffs \n\n\n\nWhat to expect:Carbon sequestration in nutrient-deprived agricultural soils in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) seems to hold a great potential to tackle two of the most pressing issues of our time: food insecurity and climate change. Carbon-rich soils increase the resilience of agricultural systems due to their improved water holding capacity\, soil aggregation and nutrient supply and hence\, contribute to food security. At the same time\, carbon sequestration in soils is regarded as one important nature-based solution to mitigate climate change. Nevertheless\, the concepts proposed by scientists\, how to improve soil health and soil fertility vary widely\, and significant discrepancies exists around the need for chemical inputs to quickly increase food and other biomass production. The different approaches might result in potential trade-offs between high levels of crop yields and carbon sequestration. \n\n\n\nDuring the two panel discussions\, we would like to have a closer look at different land management practices and their synergies and trade-offs regarding climate change mitigation and current and future food production. \n\n\n\nDuring the first panel on the 24th of March\, scientists from different disciplines introduce the scientific debate around the matter. \n\n\n\nModeration: Leigh Winowiecki (PhD)\, CIFOR/ICRAF\, Kenya \n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:15 CETWelcome and housekeeping: Juliane Wiesenhütter\, GIZ\, Germany Dr. Paul Luu\, „4 per 1000“\, France15:15 – 16:15 CETInputs by the panellists: Rolf Sommer (PhD)\, WWF\, Germany Gatien Falconnier (PhD)\, CIRAD\, France/Zimbabwe Bernard Vanlauwe (PhD)\, IITA\, Nigeria/Kenya Lydie-Stella Koutika (PhD)\, CRDPI\, Congo Wellington Mulinge (PhD)\, KALRO\, Kenya16:15 – 16:50 CETDiscussion and questions from the audience16:50 – 17:00 CETWrap up and Closing\n\n\n\nThe second panel on 25th of March focuses on the practitioners\, land users’ and decision makers’ point of view. \n\n\n\nModeration: Niels Thevs\, GIZ\, Germany \n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:15 CETWelcoming Words and short summary of Day 115:15  – 16:15 CETInputs by the panellists Pauline Chivenge\, APNI\, Morocco Barbara Banda\, NADPZ\, Zambia Francis Ngopola\, Simpson Foundation\, Malawi Upendra Singh (PhD)\, ICDF16:15 – 16:45 CETDiscussion and questions from the audience16:45 – 17:00 CETWrap up and closing\n\n\n\nMicrosoft Teams Link for the 24th (no registration needed) \n\n\n\nMicrosoft Teams Link for the 25th (no registration needed)
