SUMMARY:Webinar on Achieving Net Zero Carbon
DESCRIPTION:Net Zero Carbon: How We Can Meet UK Livestock TargetsVirtual Event \n\n\n\nOn the 3rd of December the British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) and the Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock (CIEL)\, will be joining forces to bring you a day of lively and informative debate\, on the topic of meeting UK livestock net zero carbon targets. \n\n\n\nClimate change is the greatest environmental challenge currently facing our planet and the way we live. Addressing this will require concerted and coordinated efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from human activity. Farmed livestock are one source of such emissions. Achieving net zero carbon requires a strong consensus on where the industry is currently and a clear understanding of the areas which can contribute the most towards achieving this ambition. \n\n\n\nReducing the environmental footprint of livestock production and adapting our livestock production systems to the changing climate to support global food security is possible. But we need to identify the most effective solutions to each problem and implement these solutions via strong political will and action at both a local and global scale. \n\n\n\nThis will be a unique opportunity to learn about\, and discuss with experts in the field\, meeting UK livestock net zero carbon targets\, while expanding your relevant network and developing new partnerships. \n\n\n\nNet Zero Carbon – ProgrammeDownload

SUMMARY:Webinar: Developing methane inhibitors for grazing livestock on NZ farms
DESCRIPTION:Join the NZAGRC State of Science webinar on 6 December 2021 to learn more about “Developing methane inhibitors for grazing livestock on New Zealand farms”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMethane inhibitors or feed additives offer a real opportunity to lower emissions by reducing the activity of methane-producing microbes in the digestive systems of ruminant livestock. This mitigation strategy is most effective when the additive is in every mouthful of feed and can reduce methane produced during rumen fermentation. \n\n\n\nHowever\, daily administration comes at a practical and economic cost. Globally\, two potential feed additive options have emerged in the last few years – Bovaer by DSM and a seaweed species from FutureFeed in Australia. Both have been demonstrated to be effective in total mixed ration systems where feeds are provided to ruminants daily and the additive can be formulated into the feed. \n\n\n\nWhile this is encouraging\, their application in New Zealand’s farming systems is a challenge. Research funded by the Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGgRc) is helping overcome this – investigating highly potent compounds that can be provided to animals through long-life (>100 days) intra-ruminal devices. \n\n\n\nRon Ronimus will give an update on progress in this quest supported by Mark Aspin providing a commercialisation and delivery perspective\, outlining the challenges that have been overcome – and those that remain. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to ask Ron and Mark questions using Zoom’s chat function. They will use the final 20 minutes of the session to answer as many questions as possible. The Chair will select and ask questions on participants’ behalf. \n\n\n\nClick HERE for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Incentivising Carbon Farming
DESCRIPTION:Farmers\, policymakers\, companies\, and other stakeholders will discuss the future of carbon farming during the conference ‘Incentivising carbon farming’. Get your free ticket now for the online plenary program on December 8th\, and for one or more online workshops on December 9th. \n\n\n\nA consortium of Dutch\, Flemish\, German\, and Norwegian partners started four years ago to develop the Carbon Farming project. Farmers have the perfect position to deliver a positive impact on our climate challenges and the climate goals that are formulated to reduce emissions by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality in 2050. Through better soil management and carbon farming\, farmers can sequester carbon into their soil\, caught from atmospheric CO2\, in a sustainable form of soil organic matter. Important is for policy makers to positively stimulate farmers in applying carbon farming measures. \n\n\n\nLearn more HERE.

SUMMARY:WEBINAR: Takahuri Whenua: Collective action to mitigate on-farm emissions
DESCRIPTION:Join the NZAGRC for their next State of Science webinar on their research into options for mitigating agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenters: Tanira Kingi (Emeritus Scientist\, Scion) and Phil Journeaux (AgFirst) \n\n\n\nChair: Chris Koroheke (AgResearch) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMāori are significant contributors to the primary sector. Around 5.7% of Aotearoa is in Māori ownership\, most of which is Māori freehold land – governed by collective structures and passed down from generation to generation. \n\n\n\nSince 2015\, the NZAGRC has had a Māori research programme\, supporting individual Māori-owned farms to understand and reduce their agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. \n\n\n\nThe programme has entered a new phase with the launch of Takahuri Whenua – a major project partnering with three Māori Collectives to support their ambitions to achieve a high-value\, low-emissions bio-economy within their tribal rohe. \n\n\n\nTakahuri Whenua will see the development of a framework that will help Collectives explore options for reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions across multiple land-holdings\, while meeting the expectations of their extensive landowner communities. As part of this\, farm system and land use change (forestry and/or horticulture) options for eighteen case study farms (six for each Collective) will be modelled. \n\n\n\nProject leaders\, Tanira Kingi and Phil Journeaux\, will introduce the project\, its history and context\, the modelling work and next steps prior to its completion in June 2023. \n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions using Zoom’s chat function. Phil and Tanira will use the final 20 minutes of the session to answer as many questions as possible. The Chair will select and ask questions on participants’ behalf. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Implementing circularity in livestock based food systems in tropical islands
DESCRIPTION:Join CIRAD – Reunion on 7 March and/or 8 March\, 2022\, for a webinar titled ‘Implementing circularity in livestock based food systems in tropical islands’. \n\n\n\nThe webinar is part of a case study on circular food systems (CFS) on tropical islands\, carried out by CIRAD with financial support from the GRA CFS Network. \n\n\n\nTropical Islands are generally isolated territories\, where limitation of resources and land is more evident. They are often dependent on imports for a large part of their needs and produce only few key resources for exportation. Tropical islands are highly vulnerable to climate change and it is essential to reduce the environmental impact of their food systems (FS). Increasing circularity of FS around livestock production seems a promising way to reduce their carbon footprint. The webinar will dive into a developed methodology to identify livestock based scenarios to increase circularity of food systems\, addressing case studies on Madagascar and Reunion. \n\n\n\nFurther information and links to join the webinar can be found here: \n\n\n\nWebinarCIRADDownload

SUMMARY:Climate-Soil Community of Practice Event - Day 1
DESCRIPTION:Join this upcoming event within the Community of Practice\, which is jointly organized by the “4 per 1000” Initiative and GIZ Sector Project Soil Protection\, Combating Desertification\, Sustainable Land Management (SV Boden). \n\n\n\nPanel discussion on: Soil carbon sequestration and food security in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA): Synergies and Tradeoffs \n\n\n\nWhat to expect:Carbon sequestration in nutrient-deprived agricultural soils in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) seems to hold a great potential to tackle two of the most pressing issues of our time: food insecurity and climate change. Carbon-rich soils increase the resilience of agricultural systems due to their improved water holding capacity\, soil aggregation and nutrient supply and hence\, contribute to food security. At the same time\, carbon sequestration in soils is regarded as one important nature-based solution to mitigate climate change. Nevertheless\, the concepts proposed by scientists\, how to improve soil health and soil fertility vary widely\, and significant discrepancies exists around the need for chemical inputs to quickly increase food and other biomass production. The different approaches might result in potential trade-offs between high levels of crop yields and carbon sequestration. \n\n\n\nDuring the two panel discussions\, we would like to have a closer look at different land management practices and their synergies and trade-offs regarding climate change mitigation and current and future food production. \n\n\n\nDuring the first panel on the 24th of March\, scientists from different disciplines introduce the scientific debate around the matter. \n\n\n\nModeration: Leigh Winowiecki (PhD)\, CIFOR/ICRAF\, Kenya \n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:15 CETWelcome and housekeeping: Juliane Wiesenhütter\, GIZ\, Germany Dr. Paul Luu\, „4 per 1000“\, France15:15 – 16:15 CETInputs by the panellists: Rolf Sommer (PhD)\, WWF\, Germany Gatien Falconnier (PhD)\, CIRAD\, France/Zimbabwe Bernard Vanlauwe (PhD)\, IITA\, Nigeria/Kenya Lydie-Stella Koutika (PhD)\, CRDPI\, Congo Wellington Mulinge (PhD)\, KALRO\, Kenya16:15 – 16:50 CETDiscussion and questions from the audience16:50 – 17:00 CETWrap up and Closing\n\n\n\nThe second panel on 25th of March focuses on the practitioners\, land users’ and decision makers’ point of view. \n\n\n\nModeration: Niels Thevs\, GIZ\, Germany \n\n\n\n15:00 – 15:15 CETWelcoming Words and short summary of Day 115:15  – 16:15 CETInputs by the panellists Pauline Chivenge\, APNI\, Morocco Barbara Banda\, NADPZ\, Zambia Francis Ngopola\, Simpson Foundation\, Malawi Upendra Singh (PhD)\, ICDF16:15 – 16:45 CETDiscussion and questions from the audience16:45 – 17:00 CETWrap up and closing\n\n\n\nMicrosoft Teams Link for the 24th (no registration needed) \n\n\n\nMicrosoft Teams Link for the 25th (no registration needed)
