OECD webinar: New Zealand’s standardized methodology for estimating farm-level emissions
March 11 @ 10:30 pm – 11:30 pm NZDT

The OECD is holding a webinar on New Zealand’s standardized methodology for estimating farm-level emissions. Spanish ECOGAN tool for farm-level GHG calculations on Tuesday 11 March from 10:30am to 11:30am Paris time.
MPI worked with the agriculture sector to develop a standard way to estimate on-farm greenhouse gas emissions. This methodology was released on 13 December 2024. Currently there are more than 10 emissions calculators, all using different methods to estimate emissions. Our standardized estimation is a key step towards pricing emissions in the future and will support on-farm emissions measurement by 2025. Having a standard method will also enable new products and features that improve farm management and reporting.
On 24 February the OECD published report Measuring Carbon Footprints of Agri-Food Products, which discusses the eight building blocks needed for measuring carbon footprints of agri-food products. Two crucial building blocks are the availability of scientific methods, and reliable and easy-to-use farm-level calculation tools. One challenge is that existing farm-level tools often use different methods, leading to different results for the same farm. The OECD organized this webinar to give New Zealand/MPI the opportunity to share our thinking behind the methodology.
Presenters from MPI are:
- Darran Austin (Principal Adviser, Climate Change Agriculture)
- Nick Donald (Agricultural Emissions Methodology Lead)
- Oliver Boys (Agricultural Emissions Programme Specialist)
