Qinisa Initiative: Strengthening agricultural greenhouse gas research in Southern Africa

The highly anticipated Qinisa Initiative, a flagship programme under the ARUA Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Food Systems (ARUA-SFS), hosted at Future Africa (University of Pretoria), in partnership with the Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa (CCARDESA) and the Global Research Alliance for Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA), was launched on the 27th of August 2024, at the Sheraton Hotel, Pretoria, South Africa.

Prof. Francis Petersen

In a powerful endorsement of the Qinisa Initiative, Prof. Francis Petersen, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, highlighted its role in driving agricultural GHG mitigation through a holistic, cross-sectoral approach. He emphasized the importance of dialogue, co-creation, and technology transfer in agriculture, ensuring scientifically sound solutions that benefit communities at the grassroots level.

With strong support from Future Africa, the New Zealand Government, the GRA, and global researchers, Prof. Petersen reaffirmed the University’s commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle food security and sustainability challenges.
