Course 3 – Introduction to the Science behind Agricultural GHG Inventories

This course introduces the science behind agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions including where emissions come from, and how to measure and mitigate them. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodologies for estimating agricultural GHG emissions are introduced. It is expected that students understand the material covered in courses 1 and 2.

Upon completion of this course, you will:

• understand the basic scientific concepts behind agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; 
• understand the processes by which carbon dioxide (CO₂), nitrous oxide (N₂O) and methane (CH₄) are emitted from agricultural systems;  
• be familiar with the different ways in which nitrous oxide and methane are measured; 
• understand the importance of research in estimation of GHG emissions;  
• describe in general a country’s agricultural system as a basis for establishing its GHG emissions profile; 
• know where data can be sourced for compilation of an agricultural GHG inventory; and 
• know the basic concepts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodologies used in compiling inventories.
